Jongleurs Legend Wins Award

The Moet British Independent Film Awards were held last night and among the winners was our very own Michael Smiley.

Michael was crowned best supporting actor for his performance in Ben Wheatley’s “Kill List” the story of an ex solider turned assassin. Michael plays the part of Gal a humorous, laid-back hit-man from Northern Ireland.

Michael came up against some immense competition in the form of:

Tom Hardy (Inception, Bronson) for his role in Tinker Tailor Solider Spy ,

Benedict Cumberbatch (Atonement, Sherlock) also in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,

Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes, V for Vendetta) for his role in Tyrannosaur

Ezra Miller (City Island, Afterschool) for his role in We Need To Talk about Kevin.

But the Jongleur was singled out for recognition for his fantastic performance in Wheatley’s Thriller.

Michael’s acting career has grown significantly over the last few years appearing in the hugely popular BBC drama “Luther”and John Landis’ black comedy “Burke and hare” although he’s probably most recognized for his role asTyres O'Flaherty in the 1999-2001 hit sitcom “Spaced”.

Michael has been performing at Jongleurs since early 2000’s but actually started as a House Music DJ. A lot of Smiley's humour is derived from Club Culture which he observes, dissects and belittles. His Belfast upbringing played a strong part in his routine, ranging from family foibles all the way to religious bigotry. He's not so much the boy-next-door, as the squatter downstairs.

Smiley's direct style coupled with his streetwise yet personable manner have made him a popular choice as TV presenter. Naked City, Butt Naked and Late License for Channel 4 and BBC2's award winning comedy show, The Empire Strikes Back make up some of his TV presenting work. His unique style of presenting has also been extensively utilised on Radio, by stations ranging from Kiss 100 to BBC Radio 1 and 4.

Overseas work includes solo shows at the Dublin Fringe, the Adelaide, Melbourne, New Zealand and Cape Town Comedy Festivals, whilst he has also performed short runs in Amsterdam and Hong Kong.

Critics have been raving about Kill List which is now available on DVD.
